The trend towards web browsing on mobile & tablet devices is indeed staggering and the rapid shift to the new generation of computing devices requires that website templates handle the broad range of web browsers & touch devices that they are now being loaded onto.
This however does not discount the need for good looking website templates that are delivered on the more traditional web browsers on desktop PC's or notebooks. At this point in time, the Internet demands what are called 'responsive' website templates that will automatically adjust in accordance with the type of device they are being displayed on.
Smaller touch devices such as iPhone's & various Android hand held devices obvioulsy have a much smaller screen than any other computing device & as such are more user friendly when browsing websites that adjust accordingly. A website that requires the user to zoom in & out all the time can be tedious and sometimes will result in critical accessibility issues that will quickly have users leaving the site.
Larger touch devices such as iPad's & tablet PC's may have a bigger screen than smartphones, but the touch navigation in itself requires a suitable design that may still have significant differences to websites designed for the traditional point & click navigation.
Websites such as this one (www.tekspec.com.au) is fully responsive & will adjust the template depending on the device it is being viewed on. Try it- if you're looking at this on a PC, whip out your smartphone & see the difference I am talking about (or vice versa). The difference in usability is profound.
Is your website easily accessible to users on touch devices? If not then it's time for an upgrade to a responsive template.
Online consumer spending continues to rise and we are seeing a shift from traditional retail stores to web based purchasing.
Whether you're looking to sell just a handful of products or a large inventory, there are solutions available to suit your needs.
For larger shopping cart projects I use a hosted software as a service platform called Magento GO.
Magento GO is highly customizable, robust & easy to use and generates seach engine friendly permalinks. Their in house support is also very good with live chat available 24 hours a day.
If you only need to sell 1 to 10 products then there's no real need to invest in a sophisticated shopping cart. A simple 'Buy Now' button setup via PayPal will do what's necessary & you can let PayPal handle the transaction process, including payment via Credit Card.
