I have been involved in preparing artwork press-ready since 2006 and have learned a lot about the print industry. Creating a design that looks good is one piece of the puzzle, the other is ensuring that the finished result meets your expectations. Commercial grade printing has fundamental elements and if all of the requirements are not met, entire print jobs can be faulty & often require a full reprint which ultimately costs someone a lot of money.
The key elements of a commercial grade press print job are:
- CMYK 4 colour process colour model (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) unless printing using spot colours
- Minimum 300dpi images (Dots Per Square Inch)
- All text converted to outlines (no fonts to be loaded)
- Minimum 3mm bleed on all edges
- Cut marks supplied
- Distilled PDF (Portable Document Format) for consistent electronic distribution
- Digital OR printed proof supplied for client sighting
